If you can't connect to your server on some ports it's most likely due to the Windows Firewall. We enable the Windows Firewall on all Virtual & Dedicated servers at the time of provisioning. By default ONLY Remote Desktop Protocol is allowed access while all other types of traffic, such as HTTP, MAIL, DNS, ICMP are dropped. We recognise that not all of our customers are technical enough to configure the Firewall or may not realise the importance of turning on the Firewall, and as a result we ere on the side of caution by enabling it from the word go. Depending on the role of your server (web server, database server, mail server, etc) the first thing you should do is configure Firewall exceptions allowing your specific traffic types. Click Start > Control Panel > Windows Firewall > Exceptions Some common protocols and ports; HTTP: TCP 80 HTTPS: TCP 443 RDP: 3389 SSH: 22 FTP: 21 SMTP: 25 POP3: 110 IMAP: 143 DNS Queries: UDP 53 DNS Tranfers: TCP 53 |
